Background and training

I completed my BA in Psychology at the National University of Ireland Galway before moving to the UK, where I studied for a Masters of Science in Developmental Psychopathology in Durham university.

I worked as an Assistant Psychologist at a children’s hospital in Manchester, split across two multi-disciplinary teams working with children in the care system. I also worked with families where children and adolescents presented with cognitive and emotional difficulties, completing psychological and neuropsychological assessments and interventions.

I received my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Lancaster University, UK in 2012. During the training, I worked across a range of services and settings around the Greater Manchester area, with different age groups and ability levels, before specialising in adult mental health. The experience gained during the training programme emphasised the importance of the therapeutic relationship and how integral this was in helping people to make changes in therapy.

Clinical experience

Since completing training, I have worked as a Clinical Psychologist in a number of different adult mental health settings. While living in Australia, I worked with a multi-disciplinary team focused on helping adults with physical health difficulties who were at increased risk of hospitalisation manage their long term conditions more effectively. Upon returning to the UK, I worked in the public and private services providing specialist psychological therapy for adults with moderate to severe mental health difficulties. I have years of experience in providing evidence-based psychological assessment, formulation and intervention to people with a variety of mental health needs, including depression, anxiety disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic, generalised anxiety, health anxiety and social anxiety), trauma, anger management, and interpersonal difficulties (including personality disorder). My work is informed by a number of different approaches, including Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Schema Focused Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy,  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and mindfulness approaches.

I have been working fully within the private sector in Ireland since January 2022, and am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland.

Psychological therapy

I have worked with adults with a range of psychological difficulties that impact upon the ability to function in the way people would like. Much of my therapeutic work is informed by Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and I completed the CAT Practitioner training in 2021.

CAT is a useful approach for many difficulties, including  depression, anxiety, phobia, and interpersonal difficulties. People who benefit from CAT tend to have repeating patterns which are causing problems in their life, for example struggling to look after themselves or maintain relationships, a difficulty managing alcohol or substances, or patterns of disordered eating. The therapy involves looking at how a person thinks, feels, and acts, and the experiences and relationships that have shaped the person. Together, a new understanding of the difficulties is developed which links how the person relates to themselves and others in their daily life, with what they have experienced in the past. This new understanding is then used to explore alternative ways to respond, helping the person to more effectively meet their goals.

Specialising in exploring patterns in the ways people relate to themselves and others, this information is then used to focus on recovery and positive changes. I am passionate about helping people develop the skills they need to manage their own mental health and to spot patterns before they become problematic. I also have experience in providing supervision to my colleagues.

My approach

I am interested in helping people to understand themselves more fully, and adopt an affirmative and non-judgmental approach to my work. I endeavour to continue to be an ally to LGBTQIA+ and BAME individuals.
